Chapter Sixteen

May 14, 1900

Paris, France

Jenee returned to find Xavier still sleeping. She made sure he was breathing evenly and then settled herself into a chair and pulled The Time Traveler’s Lover from her pocket. To have the book in her hand gave her courage and hope. Now that she knew the truth about Iris, she saw the book in an entirely different light.

She glanced at Xavier, and Iris’ words replayed in her mind. To live without love is to not live. She was completely torn in two by her feelings. She never would have believed in love at first sight if it hadn’t happened to her. Yes, she did love Xavier, and she would have to tell him the truth at some point and demand the truth from him. Even if he divorced his wife and they could reassure his daughter that she would not lose her father, could Jenee make her life here, in a time she wasn’t born into, as Emily had done? And what about Gaby? Was she also transported back to another time to help Iris retrieve the third painting? And if so, where and when?

She opened the book and flipped through the pages. Although the love scenes between Marco and Iris were tempting to lose herself in, they would only stimulate her, and she might do something foolish like crawl into bed with Xavier. Now was not the time for that. She wasn’t sure they would ever share that magic of passion again until she made her decision. Better to make sense of the paintings and what happened to them.

She found the page she was looking for and began to read.

The carriage jostled over the rutted road that led from Florence to Montalcino. Marco held Iris’ hand. Occasionally he lifted it and kissed it as though to reassure himself that she was still beside him. His usual playful exuberance was muted. Iris could not assuage his worries, nor could she assure him that they would make it safely to his family’s farm and vineyards outside the hilltop town. There was always danger on the roads, bandits, mercenaries, and other malcontents. The Italian peninsula’s constant internecine warfare meant his coachmen were armed, as was Marco. His house in Florence had been locked up, and his paintings packed and stored in the carriage he’d hired to take them to Montalcino. They’d left just after dawn, determined to reach the Allegretto estate before dusk.

“You haven’t told me why we left Florence in such haste, Marco.”

“Amore mio, I want my family to meet the woman I love. We must be married as soon as possible, and our issue must be recognized as legitimate.” He eyed her adoringly, with the hint of lust that never left his gaze when he looked at her. “You might be with child even now, or you will soon be.”

“I’m not with child.”

She wasn’t even sure if she could get pregnant so long as she was a time traveler. In the back of her mind, she worried that Marco would one day abandon her if she didn’t bear him children.
